As I snapchatted a selfie, I scrolled through the filters to see which was best and noticed one was listed as zero degrees. I had just left a celebrity/blogger gifting suite and had been given the ultimate A-list hair and makeup treatment (thanks, Caravan!). Feeling like -17 degrees below Fahrenheit but looking like a million bucks, I was ready to kickoff NYFW and check out what fall/winter 2016 has in store for us.
Snagging an Uber can be a hot commodity during fashion week, so I had my favorite Italian driver on call to get me through the traffic in between shows. From stories of Alex Baldwin riding his bike around town to picking up Shakira to suggestions of restaurants I need to dine at if I want to “become a movie star,” Kristo never disappoints in his conversation topics. He’s also the BEST compliment giver.
First up was Nika Tang, which was held at the Gibney Dance Center. Drawing inspiration from Western fashion and emulating details of natural desert undergrowth, multi-layer ensembles were at the forefront of this autumn/winter 2016 presentation, displaying an array of over-sized trench coats, leather and wool jackets, and fur and button accents in rich, earthy base tones. The collection featured a delicate but bold mix of prints and textures with combinations of snakeskin and splashes of turquoise cultivated as an abstract interpretation of the animation film Rango. Pops of unexpected rich burgundy and soft lilac entered the collection as a nod to architect Luic Barragan. The highlight of this presentation was most definitely thinking I was breathing the same air as Travis Wall (shout out to my fellow dance fans) – sadly, it wasn’t him.

While most NYFW goers plan on heading out to after parties, appearances, etc. when the sun goes down, I, on the other hand, spent most of my evenings tucked away in Astoria with my cousin binging on Broad City and staying trim a la the “white pizza and Brooklyn bagel diet.” You guys should try it sometime.

Don’t forget to subscribe to the Eye Hate Heels podcast on iTunes to listen to more NYFW shenanigans! Psst… I ran into Zac Posen.

What do Empire, Teen Wolf and The Miss Universe Pageant all have in common? Many of their stars sat front row at Project Runway winner Leanne Marshall’s NYFW show. Leanne debuted her new fall/winter collection of flowing gowns, and I was asked to Instagram for her show, which was held at Skylight Clarkson. SO much fun! The collection featured over 40 gowns made from silk chiffon, silk charmeuse, and silk wool. While I was drooling over pretty much every look, I couldn’t take my eyes off the hair and makeup on each model. I was seriously in awe.

I left NYFW on a broken down train and with a sinus infection but am amped for these wear-now trends I took away from the shows:
Velvet – so luxurious for a gown, no?
Fuchsia – was a standout shade!
Shimmer – lots of embellishments and major metallics.
Chunky Socks and Sandals – I actually wore this to Leanne Marshall’s show and felt pretty retro!
Lace – darkly romantic and perfect for the evening.
Pinafore Tops – tie-back tops are a playful layering piece.
